ummm I just don't understand WHY these aren't in my possession???

Mix of fashion and art, the Jean Charles De Castelbajac collection clash by its originality. Leopard print, Muppet Show, Warhol, three themes issues with a lot of humor for a colored Pop show made with over-size Kermit, faces dresses and rubicube down jackets. A fashion which does not take itself seriously and which gives the smile!

Piet Fireplace by Fredrik Hyltén-Cavallius

The 'Piet' fireplace by Swedish designer Fredrik Hyltén-Cavallius. From the designer:

Piet is a chimney free indoor stove with a brass reflector, that burns ethanol fuel instead of wood. This gives no smoke or soot and thereby eliminates the need of a chimney.

A layer of rockwool fire insulation between the reflector and the outer shell keeps the outside cool. This means that you can always touch the ceramic body of Piet without burning your hand and also means that Piet can be placed closer to walls or other furniture.

Since it doesn’t require any permanent installation you can just bring it with along when you move or place it wherever you like when you refurnish.

The name is a tribute to Danish architect and mathematician Piet Hein since the stove has the form of a super elliptic egg.

this is a dream of owen pallet returning to me

(photo & words: The Grizzly Life)

Owen Pallet, aka Final Fantasy has been working on his third full-length LP, Heartland, since November 2008 but I have a feeling the idea has existed for much longer.
"The songs themselves form a narrative concerning a farmer named Lewis and the fictional world of Spectrum. The songs are one-sided dialogues with Lewis, a young, ultra-violent farmer speaking to his creator," Pallet said.
The album is a fully orchestrated record, designed to exist simultaneously as an album, a 45-minute piece of orchestral music and a set of songs for looped violin and voice. Heartland will be out Jan. 12, 2010 on Domino Records. Final Fantasy will be on tour with The Mountain Goats this fall - that's one show I do NOT want to miss.

slinky is that you?

Korean designer Yangsoo Pyo has create the 'Afro Chair'. Of the curious design, he says:

“Afro” is a chair that employed the image of the hair style “Afro Permanent hair.” Springs are used to visualize the tangled and puffed up texture of the afro hair. The springs used to create the “Afro chair” are the two-ring binder springs used to bind together a notebook. The two-ring binders do not get tangled but rather wraps around each other. Therefore, there is no danger of destroying women’s stockings or knitwear. In fact the chair is very comfy. The manufacturing process of this chair begins with a simple iron frame. Then, the springs are used instead of the normal sponge and leather cover.

london fashion week ::: Josh Goot's fearless graphics

Australian designer Josh Goot showed an intelligent, blindingly bright SS2010 collection at London Fashion Week earlier this week, presented in an open air car park - a suitably urban location given the collection's powerfully modern feel.

The collection, made up mostly of elongated t-shirt dresses, mini dresses and tanks, was all about bold graphic prints. The pieces themselves, which also included a handful of pants and jackets, were kind of secondary, acting more like personal, mobile canvases for the beautifully sharp, urban graphic prints that adorned them.

monsters of folk (wait, whaaaat?)

The Monsters of Folk album is out Sept 22 and I'm so excited - The supergroup is a collaboration of some of my favorite artists. It includes Conor Oberst & Mike Mogis (bright eyes), M. Ward, and Yim Yames (mmj). Some of the tracks can be found here, for your listening pleasure.

The wide-ranging instrumental palette is one clue that their name, Monsters Of Folk, should not be taken literally. It’s deliberately off-kilter, dashing expectations from the get-go. It also introduces a subtle, recurring theme of spiritual yearning/questioning that deepens, occasionally darkens, but finally uplifts the mood of the entire album. Though there are elements of country, blues, easygoing rock and, yes, folk to be heard throughout, the overall sound defies instant categorization.

Oh and of the name, Oberst says: “The name is very misleading, which I like. I think it’s good to have a little bit of misconception. If I had heard that name, I would think, first, that it’s a terrible name, and then I’d picture guys on bar stools, unplugged style, playing songs like that. But I think the record has a lot of different dimensions and I’m pretty happy with how it came out.”

Oh. Ok. I get it, kind of.

Marimekko's Autumn/Winter 2009/10

I'm obsessed with Marimekko's Autumn/Winter 2009/10 women collection! Designers Samu-Jussi Koski and Mika Piirainen offer playful and vibrant designs this winter.

Samu-Jussi Koski has been inspired both by brand new designer prints and by treasures found in Marimekko's archive of over 3,000 designs. Maija Isola's cheerful Pergola pattern (1965) charmed Koski with its inimitable Marimekko feel. Another design by Maija Isola in the collection is the graphic Kissapöllö pattern from 1961, featured on garments with soft, rounded lines.

In Mika Piirainen's collection, Maija (and Kristina Isola's Kukkatori pattern) brings summer blooms in the middle of winter. The collection also ventures into the night of space; Maija Isola's Meteori design playfully float on the round shapes of the clothes.
