Deerhoof: Jeff Tweedy (and Sons) Collaboration, Milk Man Reissue, Documentary Film, Tour

Tonight in London, San Francisco art rockers Deerhoof will take the stage at Alexandra Palace to play Milk Man, their 2004 album, in its entirety for the first time ever. (They're in good company, sharing the stage with the Flaming Lips performing The Soft Bulletin and Dinosaur Jr. performing Bug.) And to celebrate the occasion, Polyvinyl will reissue Milk Man on 180-gram strawberry vinyl, on July 5. Also on July 5, Polyvinyl will release the band's collaborative WOOM on Hoof single, the newest in a series of singles that puts different vocalists over Deerhoof instrumental tracks. This one features the Ba Da Bing records duo WOOM, with WOOM singing over Deerhoof's "Must Fight Current" on the A-side and Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier remixing WOOM's "Quetzalcoatl's Ship" on the flip. A future installment of the series will include a real out-of-nowhere collaboration, with Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy and his sons Spencer and Sam.

Right now, all the members of Deerhoof are on the Congotronics Vs. Rockers tour, inspired by the Tradi-Mods Vs. Rockers: Alternative Takes on Congotronics compilation. The tour links various indie rock entities (Deerhoof as well as Wildbirds and Peacedrums, Juana Molina, and Skeleton' Matt Mehlan) with members of Konono N°1 and Kasai Allstars, the bands of Congolese street musicians who have released records as part of Crammed Discs' Congotronics series. The tour is hitting venues across the world this summer, and it'll also be the subject of a currently in-production documentary called Kinshasa Superband. Rockers show in Brussels.

All Tomorrow’s Parties is a DIY concert film featuring performances from an eclectic mix artists including: Battles, Sonic Youth, Belle And Sebastian, Patti Smith, Animal Collective, Grinderman, Iggy and the Stooges, Portishead, Mogwai, Slint, Grizzly Bear, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Gossip, Daniel Johnston and The Boredoms.
The film is a semi-found bricolage made from Super8, camcorder and mobile phone footage contributed by over two hundred filmmakers, fans and musicians over the festival’s recent history, with key contributions from co-director Jonathan Caouette (Tarnation) and cinematographer Vincent Moon (The Take Away Shows, Arcade Fire).

Owen Ashworth has previously regaled us with gray, cold sadness, made it seem as if it were the fuel and energy that kept the characters in his songs running, albeit on the weakest of fumes. They were still working spoons and forks and cups to their mouths, feeding their pitiful bodies with nutrients, maybe just to steady the hunger pangs rather than supplying nourishment for sagging will and spirit. Owen Pallet, aka Final Fantasy has been working on his third full-length LP, Heartland, since November 2008 but I have a feeling the idea has existed for much longer.
Owen Pallet, aka Final Fantasy has been working on his third full-length LP, Heartland, since November 2008 but I have a feeling the idea has existed for much longer.
"The songs themselves form a narrative concerning a farmer named Lewis and the fictional world of Spectrum. The songs are one-sided dialogues with Lewis, a young, ultra-violent farmer speaking to his creator," Pallet said.
The album is a fully orchestrated record, designed to exist simultaneously as an album, a 45-minute piece of orchestral music and a set of songs for looped violin and voice. Heartland will be out Jan. 12, 2010 on Domino Records. Final Fantasy will be on tour with The Mountain Goats this fall - that's one show I do NOT want to miss.

monsters of folk (wait, whaaaat?)
The Monsters of Folk album is out Sept 22 and I'm so excited - The supergroup is a collaboration of some of my favorite artists. It includes Conor Oberst & Mike Mogis (bright eyes), M. Ward, and Yim Yames (mmj). Some of the tracks can be found here, for your listening pleasure.
The wide-ranging instrumental palette is one clue that their name, Monsters Of Folk, should not be taken literally. It’s deliberately off-kilter, dashing expectations from the get-go. It also introduces a subtle, recurring theme of spiritual yearning/questioning that deepens, occasionally darkens, but finally uplifts the mood of the entire album. Though there are elements of country, blues, easygoing rock and, yes, folk to be heard throughout, the overall sound defies instant categorization.
Oh and of the name, Oberst says: “The name is very misleading, which I like. I think it’s good to have a little bit of misconception. If I had heard that name, I would think, first, that it’s a terrible name, and then I’d picture guys on bar stools, unplugged style, playing songs like that. But I think the record has a lot of different dimensions and I’m pretty happy with how it came out.”
Oh. Ok. I get it, kind of.
