The new Museum of Liverpool, opening on July 19th will not only tell the story of its importance as one of the World’s great ports or about its cultural influence, such as with the Beatles phenomenon. It will also serve as a meeting point for History, the People of Liverpool and visitors from around the globe. Therefore, according to the Architect, Kim Herforth Nielsen, the structure functions as much more than just a Building or a Museum.

The Museum lies along the Mersey River in the center of Liverpool, and will function as a nexus, in that it physically connects the Harbour promenade with the Albert Dock, which today contains restaurants, museums and boutiques. The outdoor areas around the Museum offer seating with views to the water adding to the dynamic urban environment and serving as a meeting point for locals and visitors alike.

The theme is carried through into the Museum of Liverpool’s central atrium, with its sculptural sweeping staircase leading up to the galleries further encouraging social interaction. All of these functions result in Kim Herforth Nielsen choosing to describe the Museum as a structure that unites Liverpool.

’This Museum connects the city together on many levels - physically, socially and architecturally. The idea of creating a Museum as a nexus in both physical and symbolic expression has been central from the start. I am very satisfied to see that this ideal is carried out to the full in the completed structure.’

Birkbeck Centre for Film and Visual Media

The Centre is a unique research facility within the School of History of Art, Film and Visual Media. The project’s chief objective was to provide the Centre with a range of purpose-designed accommodation that will enable it to expand its activities, recruit additional staff and ensure its long-term future.

Located within a Grade II listed terrace once occupied by Virginia Woolf & the Bloomsbury Group, the project is a refurbishment of the basement and ground floors of Nos 39-41 Gordon Square. This included the underutilized 2 storey 1970’s extension that needed to be brought into beneficial use.

The brief called for provision of an 80 seat, ‘state of the art’ digital cinema auditorium with projection room. This was to be accompanied by a seminar room, new office spaces for the academic staff, a viewing suite, and an open area for informal meetings and social activity. The College had a particular wish for the Centre to engender a sense of community and give a strong sense of visual identity within the Gordon Square site.

The Centre is our most intense formal and visual expression built to date. The vibrant inter-connecting spaces have a rich conceptual origin, the logic of which has been carried through to the detail.

Tonight in London, San Francisco art rockers Deerhoof will take the stage at Alexandra Palace to play Milk Man, their 2004 album, in its entirety for the first time ever. (They're in good company, sharing the stage with the Flaming Lips performing The Soft Bulletin and Dinosaur Jr. performing Bug.) And to celebrate the occasion, Polyvinyl will reissue Milk Man on 180-gram strawberry vinyl, on July 5. Also on July 5, Polyvinyl will release the band's collaborative WOOM on Hoof single, the newest in a series of singles that puts different vocalists over Deerhoof instrumental tracks. This one features the Ba Da Bing records duo WOOM, with WOOM singing over Deerhoof's "Must Fight Current" on the A-side and Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier remixing WOOM's "Quetzalcoatl's Ship" on the flip. A future installment of the series will include a real out-of-nowhere collaboration, with Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy and his sons Spencer and Sam.

Right now, all the members of Deerhoof are on the Congotronics Vs. Rockers tour, inspired by the Tradi-Mods Vs. Rockers: Alternative Takes on Congotronics compilation. The tour links various indie rock entities (Deerhoof as well as Wildbirds and Peacedrums, Juana Molina, and Skeleton' Matt Mehlan) with members of Konono N°1 and Kasai Allstars, the bands of Congolese street musicians who have released records as part of Crammed Discs' Congotronics series. The tour is hitting venues across the world this summer, and it'll also be the subject of a currently in-production documentary called Kinshasa Superband. Below, we've a clip from the documentary (get ready for some untranslated French!), as well as footage of the entire crew performing "Ambulayi Tshaniye" at the first Congotronics Vs. Rockers show in Brussels.

The Brazilian born, now London-based artist Rodrigo Souto may be known as the co-founder of the acclaimed Black Garden Tattoo Studio on London’s Drury Lane but recently it’s been his historical collage art, created from antique, lost and found items that has put Souto into the spotlight. With over 15 exhibitions in his native Brazil, Souto’s first solo exhibition in London was presented earlier this year by Mas Civiles and Upper Playground at the FIFTY24 gallery.

‘La Fabrique’ is a new installation by The Cloud Collective for the 22^nd International Post and Graphic Design Festival of Chaumont. The installation fills a small room in La Fabrique, a former textile printing factory, with a soft landscape of projected letters forming the poem “Oppressive Light” by Robert Walser.

A small pathway cuts through the murmuring wave, allowing visitors to “explore the landscape, read the poem in full and immerse themselves in the new connotations that arise between text and form.”

The collective are a collaborative of freelance architects and graphic designers who describe themselves as a “social, open and creative party that measures, explores, experiments, creates, produces and does research.”

The poem, in full:

H&M’s versace Collaboration - first look

Three years after saying that a Versace collaboration with H&M "would confuse the brand," Donatella Versace has announced that (psych!) she'll be designing for the Swedish retailer after all.

The legendary blonde will be following in Lanvin's footsteps by designing both a Fall 2011 line (launching November 17) as well as an online-only pre-Spring 2012 collection arriving January 19. (Side note: How's that U.S. e-commerce coming along, H&M?)

Promising a milieu of "leather, print, color, and exuberance," the lines will include menswear, womenswear, and items for the home.

"I respect everyone who does it," she said "during a New York Times' TimesTalk session. "But the reason I didn't do it is because I work very hard to put the Versace line in the luxury section. I think to put the Versace line in H&M would confuse the brand."

Where do I begin? Mercury Design Studio totally kicks ass. It has everything from $5 60's-esque bangles to $5,000 retro chic sofas. This is the perfect shop to find unique gifts: stationary, local jewelry, books, makeup bags, graphic pillows, stuffed squirrels (....), you name it!
What I loved most about this place was its eclectic and vibrant collection of both new and old, blended together beautifully through vivid arrangements. Also, I always appreciate a shop where each little nook or room in the place has its own style and identity.
Oh, and the staff's real friendly, too!

Last October, a few hours after the Chanel show, I ran into Dree Hemingway on the Rue St. Honoré. She still had one of the tattoos drawn on the models in the show.

She was wearing black from head to toe and I liked this little detail around her wrist. It topped off her outfit. And it was as if Karl had marked all his women before letting them lose about town.

A few days ago I found out that these tattoos were going to be commercialized in the Chanel boutiques. Yep. Karl and his team are pure marketing geniuses. After giving every it-girl on the planet a 2.55 until it became THE must-have bag for every self-respecting girl (I’m not a self-respecting girl. I don’t have one.)(That doesn’t mean I don’t want one, oooooh noo.)(In all of us, there is an it-girl who would looove to make an album with Beck.), and now they’re going to bring less bulging wallets into their stores. A little like Marc Jacobs with his Marc by Marc shops, that smell a little like plastic but are never ever empty. And it serves to create a strong bond with the brand from a young age.

Sybarite’s design for the new Marni flagship at the Crystals in Las Vegas was inspired by the image of a cracking whip, seemingly suspended in mid-air as it unfurls. Defining the perimeter, this sinuous ‘lasso’ of stainless steel encircles the boutique, providing hanging space for the RTW collection. At one end it is anchored by the cash and wrap desk, and at the other it morphs into a sculptural wall inset with fibreglass shoe displays.

it's only been a few seasons now for Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli as Valentino leads, so i get that they're still trying to find their "special touch"- but i have to say, i'm confused. starting out - they were almost too safe, barely experimenting away from Valentino signatures.. so what do they do this season?

uhh.. the opposite of "Valentino", i guess.

The theme was Garden of Eden, and critics agreed the designers succeeded in creating a "transporting" experience. Models had blue Avatar makeup on their shoulders and the clothes had a distinct eco, leafy vibe, like they sprouted up from Pandora soil. But WWD said the show "seemed too desperate to be achingly cool." The paper wondered "where in this fantasy world was the essence of Valentino?" Though they applaud Chiuri and Piccioli for trying to take the label in a new direction, they add that it's "easier said than done."

The sheer organza leggings that went under brief dresses looked like trying too hard to be hip. But the clothes themselves, with swathes of drapes or inserts, using layered chiffon in different pastel colors, were delicately done.

Someone backstage suggested futurism. "I hate that," Lagerfeld shot back. "I don't believe in avant-garde clothes for a future that will never happen. Fashion is always now."

So impressed with the sans-black palette, a challenge to the traditional Chanel collections. And the rocker-ish rough silver gloves against the uber lady-like pastels? genius. but then again, when is KL not?

He'd been galvanized by a research trip to the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum, where—just up his romantic street—he lost himself in a recent bequest of Charles James gowns being prepared for this spring's exhibition American Woman. "I was reading that, actually, it was Charles James who influenced Monsieur Dior to come up with the New Look," he said. "And then I was looking at a photo of Charles James doing a fitting—and on the wall behind him was a picture of women riding sidesaddle. And that was it!"

Quite apart from the double-layered references, neatly trimmed to both house tradition and the upcoming American moment, this was an example of Dior teamwork meshing at optimum force. From the models' performances—Karlie Kloss walking as if she were a thoroughbred dressage pony herself—to Pat McGrath's porcelain-perfect makeup and matte red lips, to Stephen Jones' giant snoods, veils, and hats, right through to Michael Howells' backdrop of 3,000 overblown pastel roses, it made for an unforgettable coming together of live atmosphere, detail, and voluptuous visual pleasure. A few words from the designer:

I was, at the outset, inspired by swing seats, the kind of rocking seats which one brings out in the garden in summertime, made from tubing and fabric, which possess a lightness I like very much. Like them, Ruché combines rigidity and flexibility, with airy looks and sparing use of materials.

Ruché’s structure is in solid beech, either stained or natural. I wanted to offer a version in natural beech: natural wood is beautiful, qualitative, authentic; it’s modern, and at the same time restful, for it is one of the rare natural elements which one can have in a living room. The angles of the feet are worked ‘en congé’, which both refines them and protects the grain of the wood from shocks.

Upon its slim legs rests a thick mattress with distinctive quilting, a kind of boutis stitch or padding made using a cross-hatching of interrupted seams. Alternately flattened by the stitches then set free, the fabric ‘curls’ in places, giving rise both to its unique appearance and to its name, Ruché (a gathered or pleated fabric which serves as decoration on a piece of clothing).

Slender and fine, Ruché is nonetheless soft and welcoming. Its internal structure, its filling materials and its quilting were brought together and developed with a view to offering great comfort. Since the height of its armrests is the same as that of its back, one can just as easily sit sideways and stretch out one’s legs: as a major refinement, the armrest is mounted on elastic webbing to enable the sitter to lean back in the greatest possible comfort.

The very best of Marimekko’s graphical design idiom is represented by Maija Isola’s Kukko ja kana (1965), which provides the pattern for clean-lined outfits in ramie-silk fabric. The Sateenkaari pattern from 1971 makes a splash in a new look on a sophisticated matt-gloss silk-cotton fabric, of which there is a series of classic dresses.

i'm always drawn to ultra modern homes nestled in old neighborhoods, contrasted against traditional old cottages. this particular design by architects at Elding Oscarson is really interesting both from a socio-economical and design perspective.

the narrow site - only give meters wide, fills a gap in the street that has been vacant for over 50 years in Landskrona, Sweden.

Architects Elding Oscarson say of the site:

Immediately adjacent buildings are low, but the street is lined with buildings of various height, size, facade material, age, and approach. Behind the row of buildings is a colorful world of back yards, brick walls, sheds, and vegetation. We find this small-scale, naturally worn place extremely beautiful.

The building relates to the surroundings in scale, proportion and in the way it adds to the established rhythm of low and tall buildings along the street. Our intention is to use small means to create an array of different spatial experiences in this very small project.

The continuous interior space is opening up to the street, to the middle of the block, and to the sky above. The neighboring facades are closed, yet there is something deeply humane about their tactility, detailing, and ornaments. We want to contribute to the street with a faded border to the private sphere, with artifacts, furniture, plants, and patios; traces of human presence, consideration, and care.

Haugen/Zohar Architects have designed an outdoor fireplace in Trondheim, Norway.

From their site:
Together with the standard playground facilities we wished to combine an enclosed space for fire, storytelling and playing.

Given a very limited budget, reusing leftover materials (from a nearby construction site) was a starting point that led the design to be based on short wooden pieces. Inspired by the Norwegian turf huts and old log construction, a 5,2×4,5 meters wooden construction was built and mounted on a lighted and brushed concrete base.

The structure is made of 80-layered circles. The circles have varied radiuses and relative centre point in relation to each other.

Every circle is made out of 28 pieces of naturally impregnated core of pine that are placed with varied spaces to assure chimney effect and natural light.

Gnädinger Architects have completed the Otto Bock building in Berlin, Germany.

The building was designed for the Otto Bock HealthCare company, a world leader in prosthetics and orthotics. The organic-dynamic design of the six-storey building is based on the principles of nature – as a model of harmony between technology and people.

The facade bands have modeled the structure of muscle fibers that encircle the building structure in soft form. The “soft” appearance, combined with a unique facade media production, is an open, friendly and accessible institution, and thus contributes to the image building of the company.

To footwear designer Andreia Chaves, each shoe is an individual work of art. Raised in the busy metropolis of Sao Paulo, Brazil – Chaves understands that beauty can be found in chaos, a concept that reveals itself in her footwear designs. She explains this in her own words
The fact that I grew up in a chaotic city like Sao Paulo, full of contrasts, being in contact with such diversity and constant exposure to different visual inputs, has inspired me in how I think and conceptualize my shoes. Looking at my work, I can clearly see influence coming from my South American sense of versatility. Also in the mix - what I have been experiencing in Europe.

During her time in Florence she’s been intensely studying form, texture & visual effect, and experimenting with different materials on footwear design.These concepts come to life in each shoe created. For example, “The Invisible Shoe” has a mirrored surface, creating a deceptively obscured optical effect with every step taken. The chameleon-like façade blends in perfectly with any environment.

“The Prism Shoe” is a fascinating structural design that by itself looks like an intricate work of origami – casting beautiful kaleidoscopic shadows against the ground. Here we can clearly see Chaves’ chaotic - yet orderly - paradox coming to life through her shoe designs, resulting in dramatic silhouette.

The “Form & Texture Shoe” exhibits a disciplined study of form and material while keeping just enough chaos to stay interesting. The contradiction here is the seemingly indestructible framework fused with the disorderly arranged leather and sycamore wood cubes. The contours create a theatrical statement nothing short of impressive.

With influences such as Maison Martin Margiela, Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto and Issey Miyake., it’s clear that Chaves appreciates designers who provoke – and shatter - common perceptions that people hold. Chaves is currently focusing on her final collection – an exploration about the moving body - which is to be presented in February 2010.

Studio Gang Architects recently completed the Aqua Tower in Chicago

Totaling over 1.9 million sf, Aqua Tower is an 82-story mixed-use high-rise that includes a hotel, apartments, condominiums, parking and offices. Unlike a tower in an open field, new towers in urban environments must negotiate small view corridors between existing buildings. In response to this, the Aqua Tower is designed to capture particular views that would otherwise be unattainable. Among the building’s notable features is the green roof terrace atop its plinth—which at 80,000 sf is one of Chicago’s largest—that contains an outdoor pool, running track, gardens, fire pits and yoga terrace.

A series of contours defined by outdoor terraces extends away from the face of the tower structure to provide views between neighboring buildings. These outdoor terraces, cantilevered up to twelve feet, differ in shape from floor to floor. The terraces inflect based on criteria such as the view, solar shading and size and type of dwelling. When viewed together, these unique terraces make the building appear to undulate, presenting a highly sculptural appearance that is rooted in function. Aqua creates a strong identity through its architecture and has become a landmark addition to the Chicago skyline.

Rather than starting out with the goal of creating an icon, we let the climate and views shape the building, weaving it into its surroundings and treating the building and its environment as interconnected not separate. A couple of weeks ago, Zac Posen announced the launch of his lower priced line, an increasingly common business strategy for young designers in the recession. Posen has a new strategy to reach an even wider consumer base than he might with the $78 T-shirts from his lower-priced "urban hipster" Z Spoke line: a Target collection, yet another increasingly common business strategy for young (and old) designers in These Times.

Target treats these lines like top secret matters of the state (because, you know, chaos would ensue if bloggers or the general public knew what a designer Target dress looked like three months in advance), so not many details are available yet. It's unclear what Posen's inspiration is or how much the line will cost, but we do know the line will be available in stores April 25 through May 30.

Emma Cook releases her sixth collection with Topshop featuring a mini collection of knitwear with classic 80s names and some of her friends names on it. According to the Topshop blog, the collection took inspiration from a 1950s photograph with a teenager wearing a jumper with boys’ names on it. The collection consists of a dress, cardigan and jumper in black, red and navy blue respectively. Rent the Runway, a new website which ended its test phase and is live as of today, offers four-day designer dress rentals for $50 to $200. Their inventory includes frocks by everyone from Lela Rose to Christian Siriano; the dresses arrive right at your door and come with a pre-paid return envelope. There is, however, a catch.

You have to be a member in order to rent. There’s no apparent enrollment cost, but unless you’re invited directly, you’ll just have to join the wait list and bide your time. The by-invitation-only thing is, no doubt, an attempt to add a mystique and exclusivity to the service, bitchy though it may seem. Created for the 2009 Milan Design Week, Amanda Levete Architects’ Corian® Super Surfaces is both a demonstration of the versatility of the material and a usable space for multiple contexts.

A drop of water creating a series of ripples became the metaphor for transforming space through movement. Just as the ripple causes intricate moiré patterns in water, Corian® Super Surfaces is about revealing the moment of change through visual complexity, creating dynamic kinetic effects.

Moving through the space appears to animate it. Views are revealed and concealed as the surfaces transition between active and passive states creating countertops, display shelving, seating and a partition that seamlessly morphs from solid to transparent.

The project embodies opposites; simple yet complex, solid yet apparently kinetic, sculptural though not monolithic. The voids between the surfaces become as essential as the form and structure itself. Revealing the physical presence of the void creates maximum visual input with minimum means.

The Spanish architectural firm of Rafael de La-Hoz, have completed the Torres de Hercules.
The two cylindrical white towers are located in the Bay of Algeciras in Southern Spain.

Architect Rafael de la Hoz completes the “Torres de Hercules” in Cadiz. They are a symbol of the legendary Pillars of Hercules and the tallest buildings in Andalusia. Two cylindrical, white towers rising from a flat pool of water. On the façade-a giant lattice-appears the mythical motto from the legend of the Pillars of Hercules, “Non Plus Ultra” (nothing further beyond), warning sailors in the Mediterranean of the edge of the known world. At a height of 126 meters, the “Torres de Hercules” rise up from the Bay of Algeciras, as a new benchmark in the Campo de Gibraltar and the transition of the Straight, as their uniqueness changes the area’s landscape.

The Field House is reminiscent of general stores that were once at the heart of rural towns across America. Its shelves are stocked with a wide variety of merchandise, including classic work wear, vintage goods, basic groceries and candies, flowers, and perfumes and candles. It captures the history, geography, and folklore of times past, when goods were less disposable and had more meaning, a time when people canned their own food and took a moment to converse with strangers. It is perhaps Blackbird's most personal store, as it is inspired by owner Nicole Miller’s eccentric Pacific Northwest family and her desire to get back to basics.

In addition to merchandise, The Field House plans to have free weekly classes on lost skills such as "How to Debone a Chicken" or "Lawnmower Repair." The store will sell Christmas trees for the holidays and will serve a "cup-a-joe" from an insulated Stanley thermos.

The Field House is an experimental pop-up shop. After three months, Blackbird will decide whether to make it a permanent part of the neighborhood. It is located behind Blackbird at 5465 Leary Avenue NW in Ballard. The brands and items currently offered at The Field House include:

"Where the wild things are" is a capsule collection imagined by Spike Jonze who was inspired by his next fantasy movie in particular by clothes of his characters; big animals with hairs! Naturally clothes are in false fur. A jewel range also inspired by animals drawn by Pamela Love complete the project.

Jean Paul Gaultier is doing a Target collection that will hit more than 250 Target stores across the country and Target.com on March 7, and be available through April 11.

Gaultier is the third established designer to do a collection for the mass retailer (after Alexander McQueen and Anna Sui) under the Designer Collaboration series.

Jean Paul Gaultier for Target pays tribute to the American woman, celebrating the forces of style both past and present in American pop culture, the retailer said.

Kate and Laura Mulleavy are the Pasadena-native sisters behind the label Rodarte . To celebrate their 10th collection for the Fall/Winter ‘09 season, Rodarte will take over Colette's 2nd floor temporary retail space and gallery to bring a bit of Los Angeles to Paris, from October 5th to November 7th.

From epic horror films to musical choices and favorite books (in collaboration with Dashwood books), the store will give visitors a unique opportunity to discover Rodarte's inspiration and creative process.

The shop-in-shop will of course feature the Fall/Winter ‘09 Rodarte collection, plus the famous thigh-high boots of Nicholas Kirkwood , the recent Opening Ceremony collaboration, designs by friends of Rodarte like David Shrigley, Miranda July, Mike Mills, and Rebekah Miles, as well as colette exclusives such as “I hate / I love Rodarte” tee-shirts and sweats, notebooks and badges with adorable dog sketches drawn by the sisters, and marbled Repettos.
